Job Description and Duties

The Fire Fighter (Safety) will be directed by the Fire Chief in the Department of Poice Services at the Department of State Hospitals – Atascadero (ASH). The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties but not limited to:

• Perform fire prevention inspections of all hospital grounds and buildings for fire hazards, target hazard identification, life safety conditions, document findings and/or deficiencies and report to the Fire Chief.
• Assist, monitor and participate with various contractors in the required inspection and testing of automatic fire sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems and fire extinguishers.
• Respond to all emergency calls, other service related calls, take necessary action to prevent or minimize the loss of life, property and the environment.
• Maintain the required certification for medical emergency services as required by the Department of State Hospitals (DSH) Fire Service Training Plan.
• Assist and participate in organizing, instructing, and lead fire service related training classes to other firefighters.

Working Conditions

May be required to work overtime as determined by the operational needs of the department and requested for call back situations to cover the fire station during emergency operations.

This position may require you to work within the Secured Treatment Area (STA).

Special Requirements

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • California State Fire Fighter 1 certification
  • Education equivalent to completion of high school
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification
  • Fire prevention and suppression experience on a paid or voluntary basis.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver’s License A, B, or C with fire fighter endorsement
