Position Overview and Responsibilities:

The incumbent performs professional and technical work related to the implementation of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and Chapter 62-730, Florida Administrative Code. The position is instrumental in evaluating hazardous waste clean-up activities, reviewing permit applications, and ensuring compliance through technical analysis and field activities. This role contributes directly to maintaining environmental safety and preventing contamination of Florida’s soil and water resources.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Conduct technical reviews of hazardous waste facility permit applications, closure/post-closure plans, and compliance documentation.

 

  • Evaluate environmental and engineering data for consistency with regulatory standards and Department policies.

 

  • Conduct site visits and groundwater audits of hazardous waste facilities to ensure compliance with state and federal requirements.

 

  • Prepare technical reports, audit summaries, and correspondence.

 

  • Provide regulatory guidance and compliance assistance to facilities, consultants, and the public.

 

  • Participate in rule and policy interpretation, development, and implementation activities.

 

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of State and Federal hazardous waste environmental regulations.
  • Skilled in using computer programs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and courteous working relationships with coworkers and the public.
  • Ability to organize work assignments.
  • Ability to write permits.
  • Ability to understand and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures

 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least four years of verifiable related experience in engineering, environmental science or natural sciences. Post-secondary degrees from an accredited college or university with a major in engineering, environmental science, computer science or one of the natural sciences may be used as an alternative for the required four years of experience on a year-for-year basis. A credential evaluation report from an approved agency must be submitted along with all foreign degrees.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Travel is required.

 

 

Position of Special Trust Requirement:

The incumbent of this position, in accordance with sections 110.1127 and 435.04, Florida Statutes and DEP Directive 422, Background Investigations, is required to successfully complete a background and fingerprint check.
